Biomaterials

Biomaterial testing.

We now test biomaterials and leather alternatives using our biodegradability and ecotoxicity tests. We want materials that are fully circular, and we believe natural materials and biomaterials can be bio-circular.

Our vision

Fashion that returns nutrients to the soil.

We imagine a future where fashion is compostable.

Biomaterials are replacing fossil-based products. Made from renewable biomass, they can store carbon and offset emissions until end of life. They can improve circularity and offer biodegradability and compostability at the end of it, verified by the ISO tests.

Breakdown should release minimal toxins, validated by EcoTox, and the resulting compost can support plant growth, confirmed by PRT, helping close the loop.

What are biomaterials?

From cotton to mushroom.

Biomaterials range from familiar natural fibres like cotton, hemp, wool and silk to newer materials made from sources such as mushroom, fruit and leaves.

What can we test?

The core questions of biodegradability.

Our test suite answers them directly. Curious about something else? Ask.

Will it break down in compost?ISO 20200
Are microbes actually consuming it?ISO 20136
What effect does it have on plants?Plant Response Tests
Does it contain or produce ecotoxins?Ecotox Screen
Can it be labelled Certified Compostable?Dedicated test set
Pathways for your material

Choose your route.

01Biodegradability

Quick Screen

A low-cost, rapid 20-day screen to flag likely compostable candidates. Results in about a month.

02Disintegration

ISO 20200

Lab-scale industrial composting simulation. Samples incubate in a synthetic compost mix for at least three months.

03Toxicity

EcoTox

Quantitative checks on 200+ components to confirm the material is safe for ecosystems as it breaks down.

04Material impact

Plant Response

How do plants grow in compost containing your biodegraded material? Does it enrich the soil?

05Biodegradability

ISO 20136

The leather-specific method: bacteria, plus CO₂ measured to 1 ppm. More CO₂ means more biodegradable.
